Q&A with Geoff Hooker

Questions and answers with the Perth Heat's Chairman of the Board Geoff Hooker (pictured above).

1. (NH) The Perth Heat have added more awards to the cabinet by winning the Team Administration of the Year Award at the 2012/13 Baseball Australia Diamond Awards so what do you feel are some factors which have contributed to this successful culture?
  • (GH) The Heat is "WA's Team". There are many, many good people that want the team to succeed on and off the field. I believe that all our players, coaches, ticket staff, scorers, umpires, grounds staff, technical staff understand the value of the Perth Heat to baseball in WA. They all work for organizational success in a selfless manner, where often the only return is the knowledge of a job well done.
  • (GH) Our sponsors and corporate supporters also understand what they mean to the Heat. They are not just providing revenue and resources, they are providing underpinning support for the growth of baseball in WA.
  • (GH) We also bring in good people that offer influence and benefits beyond the ABL. Graeme Lloyd and Brooke Knight are excellent examples of people who have influence far beyond their actual coaching assignments. We cannot underestimate the contribution of Steve Fish. He is "Mr Baseball" in Western Australia. I believe he really brings it all together for us.
2. (NH) As baseball is a growing sport in Australia what are some of the additional challenges an Australian Baseball League team faces and how do you deal with them?
  • (GH) I think we have grown to the point where we really need to earn our growth from now on-wards. Its easy to achieve significant growth when you come from nothing. Now we are out in the market competing and really need to prove we can offer value to our fans.
  • (GH) We've really worked hard to improve our ballpark experience. Better food and drink options, our video board and the new grandstand are examples. We're working very hard with the WA Sports and Recreation Department on facility upgrades so we can continue to offer a really good ball park experience.
3. (NH) Without giving away any specially developed business strategies what advice would you give to other ABL teams in terms of achieving high administration standards?
  • (GH) Baseball is full of good people. We believe and operate with the assumption that 90% of the people in the baseball, softball and tee-ball communities really want to help in any way they can. Over the past 7 years this has proven correct. So we never hesitate to ask for help from the diamond sports community. If help is not forthcoming, then it is probably because we have asked the wrong way. So we just ask again, in a better way.
  • (GH) Our players are very accessible. This is really important. We are so lucky our guys understand their value and willingly interact with everyone; From kids running onto the field after the game to sponsor functions away from the field.
  • (GH) The ABL is a fantastic resource for diamond sports in your state. Embrace it as a resource and integrate it into all aspects of the game in your state.
